According to Miguel Galan, president of Spain’s National Football Coaches Center, Javier Tebas allegedly shared confidential financial information about Barcelona with Athletic Bilbao officials during a private meeting. Galan claimed that Tebas revealed Barcelona’s interim financial report, showing that the club lacked revenue from VIP seat sales at Camp Nou and was facing a reduction in its squad cost limit.

“Tebas bluntly told Athletic that Barcelona didn’t have the financial balance or room to register new players under La Liga’s financial fair play rules,” Galan wrote on social media.
Nico Williams’ camp had reportedly requested a contract clause guaranteeing playing time at Barcelona, but the Catalan club declined due to financial and strategic caution—further influenced by Tebas’ disclosures. As a result, the 21-year-old forward renewed his contract with Athletic Bilbao until 2035, with his release clause soaring from €58 million to €102 million, effectively ending Barça’s pursuit.
The breakdown in negotiations has left Barcelona scrambling for alternatives. Marcus Rashford of Manchester United has emerged as a possible replacement, with United reportedly eager to offload the struggling forward.
Nico Williams, considered a perfect tactical fit under new coach Hansi Flick, was also known for his chemistry with national teammate Lamine Yamal. His departure from the radar is a significant blow to Barcelona’s summer plans.
